CORONA VIRUS – SUPPORT FOR SILTON RESIDENTS
I hope you’re all coping OK with the ‘stay at home’ instruction – at least we have some sunny weather which helps. We wondered if some information on local foodshops to include opening times and home delivery options might be helpful while we are all being asked to stay in as much as possible. Please find some suggestions below – thank you to those of you who have helped me put this together. The information is correct as of today, 27th March but may change depending on circumstances.
I have spoken to Silton Surgery who tell me that they are open as usual for the moment but that this could change. They ask that you call them first should you need to see someone. Please follow this link to their website for details of how things are working there currently but this will be updated as necessary and you will find the updates on the right hand side of the website homepage: https://www.siltonsurgery.nhs.uk/access-to-the-surgery-during-the-coronavirus/
We have had several offers of help amongst the community so if you need assistance with shopping, picking up medical supplies or would like someone to chat to, just pick up the phone or send an email. Here’s a reminder of our contact details:

LOCAL SHOPS AND TRADERS
La Chasse, Zeals
La Chasse usually supply foodstuffs to caterers, have expanded their current offer to anyone – and are delivering. You can email them a list of what is required from the home delivery information on their website www.lachasselimited.co.uk – click on the box at the top that says ‘Home Delivery’. Although some of the quantities are in commercial-sized packages, they are also bagging things up into smaller quantities. T: 01747 840996
Forge Garage Shop, Bourton
Our closest store is open from 7.30am to 7pm every day except Sunday when they open at 8.45am. They are stocked with all the essentials and we have volunteers who will happily collect for you from there and deliver to your door. The number for the shop is 01747 840552.
Prime Cuts Butchers, Gillingham
Offering next day home delivery to Gillingham and surrounding villages. Please call 01747 852053 to place your order but be mindful to make it worthwhile for them to come out. If you can club together with neighbours so that they can come to you all at the same time, so much the better. They sell butter, cheese, potatoes and eggs in addition to meat.
Stourhead Farm Shop
Revised opening hours of 9am to 12.30pm and 1pm to 4pm daily.
The Bell & Crown, Zeals
The pub is closed but they are making pies which they will deliver. Ring to order on 01747 820696.
Sprout and Flower, Mere
Revised opening hours 8am to 2pm Monday to Saturday, selling fruit, vegetables, milk, bread, eggs, cheese and a whole host of other products. One person at a time in the shop currently. They will deliver in the afternoons to the elderly and vulnerable and Silton is within their delivery radius, T: 01747 860300 www.sproutandflower.co.uk
Andrew Barclay Butchers, Wincanton
Revised opening hours of 8am to 1pm Monday to Saturday. No home deliveries. Two customers allowed in the shop at one time. T: 01963 34880.
Co-op, Mere and Gillingham
Both open but closing at 8pm. Restrictions on the number of people coming into the store at any one time.
Normal opening hours apply but they are enforcing a ‘one in, one out’ policy which meant I queued for half an hour (2 metres apart from the person in front and the person behind – all very well organised). The shop is well-stocked and it was a pleasant experience inside as only 45 customers are allowed in at any one time. A priority slot for the over 70s is operating between 8am and 9am but I am told the wait is even longer than mine was yesterday at 10.30am.
The Udder Farm Shop, East Stour
The shop is closed but orders can be placed between 9am and 4pm Monday to Saturday for collection at a pre-arranged time. They will deliver within a 10-mile radius to the elderly and vulnerable. T: 01747 838899 www.theudderfarmshop.co.uk.
If you are aware of any others, do let us know and we will share them in a forthcoming communication.
Jackie Dyer, Foxford Cottage, Silton
With the uncertain times we find ourselves in, it would be good if we can help any villagers of Silton who are confined to their homes and perhaps struggling to get essential supplies and medicines or who would be glad of someone locally to keep in touch with. I would like to try to build up a group of residents who might be available to assist with any requests for help and I am happy to coordinate things.
If you feel you would benefit from such an offer of help, please do get in touch with me at the following email address – email@example.com – and I will do my best to help. If you could let me have the following information, that would be great:
- Your name
- Your address
- Your telephone number
- A brief idea of how we might be able to help you
- Confirmation that you would be happy for this information to be passed on to a group of village helpers.
If you are able to help with any requests we may have from residents for such a service and would like to volunteer, could you also email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and let me know the following information:
- Your name
- Your mobile number
- A brief idea of how you might be able to help
- Whether you would be happy for your mobile number to be shared with other helpers – I may set up a Whatsapp group for coordinating any requests depending on the demand.
I will also be delivering this information by hand to residents who do not have access to email.
I look forward to hearing from you and hope that we can get something off the ground soon to keep people in touch and as safe and comfortable as possible.
