Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

This is to take place from 2nd-5th June and will be a 4 day bank holiday. There will be celebrations taking place all over the UK and the Commonwealth and many will be co-ordinated nationally to ensure the greatest impact. National coordination will be organised by the National Pageant Master, Bruno Peek, and Silton has already told him we will be participating. The Pageant Master has informed us that there has been considerable media interest in the event and as a result there have been some minor changes to timings.

Broadly speaking the national format is as follows:

  1. Thursday 2nd June: Trooping the Colour and lighting of all the beacons in the country at 9.45pm.
Immediately prior to the lighting of the beacon a Bugle Call “Majesty” will be sounded at 9.40pm.
  2. Friday 3rd June: Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral.
  3. Saturday 4th June: Epsom Derby and Platinum Party at the Palace.
  4. Sunday 5th June: Jubilee Lunch and the Platinum Jubilee Pageant.

At the Parish Meeting held on 9 November it was agreed that this would be the ideal opportunity to hold another beacon party on Thursday 2 June at Manor Farm. It was also agreed that we would invite Milton on Stour to join us as they have done before. The event will be open to all residents of both villages, their families and friends and members of SOFOS. There will a cash bar and a BBQ. It was agreed at the Parish Meeting that this would not be a fund raising event, the object would simply be to break even.

As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations a unique tree planting initiative has been proposed called the Queen’s Green Canopy. Everyone, from individuals to Scout and Girl Guide groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and businesses will be encouraged to play their part to enhance the environment by planting trees during the official tree planting season, up to March 2022.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service. It is hoped the the Wyndham Oak might be included among these ancient trees.

The Parish Meeting was in favour of planting a tree for the Green Canopy, as well as one to commemorate the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

In addition all organisations lighting beacons on 2 June are encouraged to plant a circle of seven trees after the beacon lighting at a location of our choice representing the seven decades of HM The Queen’s reign. No decision has yet been made on this proposal.
